Auto Trader Integration Explained: How Automatic Listing Sync Works
Auto Trader is the dominant marketplace for used cars in the UK, with millions of visitors every month. For any modern dealership, automatic listing syndication is a necessity, not a luxury. Here is the practical explanation of how Auto Trader integration works, what it covers, and how DriveGo is set to work with Auto Trader. A direct DriveGo–Auto Trader integration is currently under development.
What is Auto Trader?
Auto Trader is the UK's largest marketplace for buying and selling cars, with millions of visitors every month. For practical purposes, 'Auto Trader integration' gives you access to the platform and its related channels through a single API connection. For a car dealership, Auto Trader is typically the most important source of leads. An average UK dealership receives between 30% and 70% of its enquiries from Auto Trader alone. It is therefore critical that your stock is always accurate and up to date on the platform.
What automatic integration covers
A complete Auto Trader integration gives you four things. First, automatic publishing: when you add a vehicle in your DMS, it is transferred automatically as a listing on Auto Trader without you needing to log in and create it manually. Second, automatic updates: when you change the price, add photos, or update the description in your DMS, the changes are reflected on Auto Trader within minutes. Third, status synchronisation: when a vehicle is marked as reserved or sold, the listing is removed automatically. Fourth, lead return: enquiries from Auto Trader forms land directly as leads in your sales pipeline without manual data entry. Without integration you have to maintain two parallel systems — your DMS and Auto Trader — and every time one of them falls out of sync, you either lose a potential customer or continue receiving enquiries about a car that has already been sold. This is why automatic integration is a basic function in any modern DMS.
How DriveGo is set to integrate with Auto Trader
DriveGo is working on a built-in Auto Trader integration, so that in future you will be able to publish and update listings directly from your stock in DriveGo. The integration is currently under development, and an agreement with Auto Trader is in the process of being finalised. The plan is that you keep your existing Auto Trader agreement as it is, and that DriveGo connects to your Auto Trader account during onboarding, so DriveGo becomes your system of record. Technically, the idea is that publishing will happen via Auto Trader's official listing API: stock vehicles with a status of 'for sale' and sufficient information (at minimum make, model, year, price and one photo) will be sent to Auto Trader, whilst vehicles under preparation, reserved or sold are held back. In this type of integration, changes typically propagate within minutes. What you need to prepare before setup
Once the integration is ready, you will need three things in place. First: an active Auto Trader account with an approved dealer profile. If you do not have an account, you will need to create one with Auto Trader first — DriveGo cannot create the account on your behalf, as it requires your business's approval. Next: the account credentials or API credentials that Auto Trader provides for connecting external systems. Some dealers receive these automatically, others need to contact Auto Trader support and request them. Finally: a plan for what to do with any existing listings you already have on Auto Trader. DriveGo's onboarding team will guide you through the entire process once the integration launches, and will ensure the connection is correct from day one.
Common setup points to be aware of
Three things come up most often with an Auto Trader integration. First: image quality. Auto Trader has minimum requirements for the number of photos and resolution, so a good system validates images before publishing and warns you if a vehicle has too few photos or too low a resolution. Second: description fields. Different dealerships have different styles for technical specifications, so the fields will need to be mappable to your preference, so the listing looks the way you want it. Third: category errors. Some vehicles (for example plant machinery or boats) do not belong on Auto Trader and should be excludable from the integration on a per-vehicle or per-category basis. DriveGo is being designed with these points in mind, so the integration will be robust once it launches — and support will be able to view log files from the API calls to identify exactly what is going wrong.
What if I want to use other marketplaces as well as Auto Trader?
Auto Trader is the largest, but other UK platforms such as Motors.co.uk, CarGurus, and eBay Motors are also possible depending on your subscription. Your Auto Trader or aggregator agreement determines which channels you have access to. When a listing is sent to Auto Trader, it is typically distributed to all your active channels automatically, so you do not need to manage each platform separately. This also means that if you want to add new marketplaces, this is managed through your platform agreements — not through DriveGo. The idea behind DriveGo's upcoming integration is that DriveGo triggers the publishing, whilst Auto Trader owns the distribution itself.
